Wikipedia.org says that Quincy, MA was “named after Colonel John Quincy, maternal grandfather of Abigail Adams and after whom John Quincy Adams was also named.” Knowing that Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams, reading that made my brain hurt.

After 12 minutes of scratching my head, I finally understood that John Adams married Abigail Adams, and they had a kid and named him John Quincy Adams after Abigail’s mother’s father, John Quincy. The town itself is named after Abigail’s grandfather. Math! Check out archives.com for a comprehensive (John) Adams/(Abigail) Smith family tree.

Historians have said that John and Abigail Adams wrote many letters to each other during the American Revolutionary War, and these letters form an eyewitness account of the war. Abigail was so active in politics that many people called her “Mrs. President.”

On June 17, 1775, during the Battle of Bunker Hill, Abigail and her son, John Quincy Adams, watched the burning of Charlestown from Penn’s Hill. One hundred and twenty-one years later, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) created the Abigail Adams Cairn to commemorate this.

Abigail Adams Cairn • Quincy, MA

Here’s where it gets interesting. The DAR put a time capsule in there, which was only just discovered four years ago when a construction company was restoring the monument because it was no longer structurally stable. These five items were found inside the soldered-shut shoebox-sized copper box:

The Sons of the American Revolution’s book, Libertas et Patrai

2¢ newspapers such as Boston Post, The Boston Traveler, and The Quincy Daily Ledger

Invitations

A scroll signed by DAR members including Abigail Adams, a descendant of Abigail and John Adams

A poem by Elizabeth Gould called “To the Memory of Abigail Adams,” which was read at the cairn’s original dedication

Sadly, Abigail Adam’s diary was not among the treasures. Check out The Patriot Ledger’s video of Quincy officials opening the time capsule:

There was certainly no shortage of plaques on the cairn, in case you were lost or uncertain of its history and meaning.

Abigail Adams Cairn • Quincy, MA

Abigail Adams Cairn • Quincy, MA

Another year later, in 2009, The Patriot Ledger reported what was inside the replacement time capsule:

Flash drives with scans of the 1896 time capsule’s documents

Current photographs with aerial views of Quincy

Copies of The Patriot Ledger newspaper that reported the time capsule’s discovery

I wonder what will happen in another 120 years?

Something about weathered signs makes me wonder about the work that went into the landmark, what everything looked like when it was new, when the upkeep stopped or would stop. I always experience a wistful feeling — curiosity lined with a vague melancholy. John J. DeMarco Park in Avon, MA was only built in 2004 but there’s a sign standing there that looks older than its age.

John J. DeMarco Park • Avon, MA

It appears that the grounds had an orphanage standing on them in the early 1900′s. The funny thing is that the sign doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the park. Perhaps it was already there when the park was built?

<img class="size-large wp-image-1527" title="John J. DeMarco Park • Avon, MA

A couple of years ago, the park’s fate was up for debate when the town was thinking about replacing it with new police and fire stations. Being that this site is the town’s only remaining open space parcel, citizens were understandably upset. I think it’s so important to conserve what little open land is left. The town needs better stations, but find somewhere else for it.

When there isn’t a whole lot to see in a given town, I default to Googlemaps. Specifically, where are the blue spots?

Number One Pond • Oxford, MA

Number One Pond is located just outside Oxford’s Rod & Gun Club. I happened to pull into their very full parking lot just as everyone was leaving a…meeting? Is that what they call it even though there are guns involved? Pardon my ignorance. My timing was pretty bad for this sort of thing, but no one from the gun meeting yelled at me or told me that I wasn’t supposed to be there. Maybe I look like a gun carrier.

Would you like to wager a guess as to what was across from Number One Pond?

Number Two Pond • Oxford, MA

There weren’t any decent vantage points for Number Two Pond, mainly because I could see some work vehicles parked in what might have been a good spot for photos. Oh well.

Number One.

Number Two.

And that, my friends, is the circle of life.

I once heard via Twitter that Lake Chaubunagungamaug was the longest place name in the US. So, a few months ago, I packed my car — meaning, I grabbed my wallet, camera and sunglasses — and went to take a look-see at Lake Choochoobrownchickenbrowncow in Webster, MA. It’s a long name, obviously, so a lot of people just call it Webster Lake. Thanks, @BostonTweet, for that wonderful piece of information!

Lake Chaubunagungamaug • Webster, MA

It was extremely cold because I thought it would be cool to visit yet another lake in the month of February. Well, it wasn’t cool — it was cold. Freezing. Are you even reading this? When reading about anything related to Massachusetts, you’re likely to come across the Algonquin Tribe a lot. The water’s namesake comes from the Algonquin language, Nipmuc, meaning “Fishing Place at the Boundaries — Neutral Meeting Grounds.”

Lake Chaubunagungamaug • Webster, MA

My bladder was super full, kind of like it is right now, so I didn’t stay too long. Also, it was really cold. Do you see what a real adventure this was? I hope so!

In the spirit of “finding buildings that are no longer in use but not actually going inside of them,” my friend Jill and I drove out to the Tremont Nail Company site in Wareham, MA this past weekend. Created in 1819, the Tremont Nail Company is the longest-standing manufacturer of steel-cut nails in the nation.

I should explain that, although the photos below appear as if these buildings were abandoned, the company does still exist. It got a new home in Mansfield, MA just six years ago. The town now owns these still-standing structures, keeping up the mills.

Tremont Nail Company • Wareham, MA

I do think the town could definitely do more with these buildings. Boarded up windows, some random graffiti and miscellaneous pieces of equipment scattered throughout the grounds all call to mind a sense of abandonment.

Tremont Nail Company • Wareham, MA

Tremont Nail Company • Wareham, MA

What are those things? Is one of them a plow? Grandmother’s sewing machine and/or well? And then there were some doors…doors into another dimension, if you will.

Tremont Nail Company • Wareham, MA

Oops, that last one may have been a payphone holder. We got a closer look at the boarded windows and noticed some funny shingles. Oh, how they made us laugh.

Tremont Nail Company • Wareham, MA

Company initials remained affixed to the side of the main building with pride.

Tremont Nail Company • Wareham, MA

Before I knew what was happening, Jill skipped across the street to The Old Company Store. Excitement, wonder and discovery welled up in her eyes. “I am gleeful!” she exclaimed. “Finally, I’m at that store located in Wareham’s historic district!”

If you couldn’t figure out that I watch a lot of movies and TV programs after reading the title of this post, then you probably don’t watch a lot of them, yourself. Or you just didn’t read the title. In any case…raise your hand if you like sandwiches. Or earls. Or England. Or introductory paragraphs that have nothing to do with the rest of the post.

Yesterday, my friend Jill and I walked against the wind across the boardwalk in Sandwich, MA. Does anybody remember Hurricane Bob? I remember reporters standing in the wind and rain at the Cape on TV, interrupting “General Hospital” when I was in middle school. Bob tore up the boardwalk in Sandwich, but then everyone banded together with donations to make a new one.

Boardwalk • Sandwich, MA

You’ll notice that each board has a name or message on it from the donors. Had I known that the powers that be were organizing this at the time, I probably would’ve gotten all of my babysitting money together and had something inscribed, like “New Kids on the Block 4-eva!”

Yesterday was sunny — great for photography — but also windy, and the cold was biting enough to elicit tears.

Boardwalk • Sandwich, MA

Boardwalk • Sandwich, MA

After Jill said, “This would be a good place to push someone if you didn’t want to deal with them anymore,” I imagined myself flailing in two feet of water.

Boardwalk • Sandwich, MA

I love the color of the water there. We didn’t stay too long because of the cold, so this is how far we got:

Boardwalk • Sandwich, MA

I’ve never been to the boardwalk in Sandwich before so I’m looking forward to going when it’s much warmer out.

Hi, everyone. My sincere apologies for not posting in nearly a month. After eight years of working at the same place, I started working at a new company last week. So, I’ve been coming to terms with leaving Marketing/advertising and transitioning to a completely new business in biosurgery. That sounds funny, but my new role is very similar in the customer/account service aspect of what I’ve been doing for some time now.

This has been tough for me to deal with, not only for the obvious reasons — the people that I’ll miss, fear of change, the reboot and need to prove myself all over again — but also, my relationship with my last job is the longest relationship that I’ve ever had. It truly does feel like a breakup. And when big things happen, I tend to shut down a bit. Part of that shutdown process, unfortunately, always includes writer’s block.

I believe that this is a good move for me. I wasn’t feeling a personal connection to my work anymore and everyone at the new place is working towards helping people with rare diseases. That makes me feel good. It also looks like there’s opportunity for advancement in my new role, which of course is a plus. And, after doing the same thing for eight years, the best part is that I get to learn something new. It’s all good.

Yesterday, I traveled a little more south than usual and visited five towns with my friend, Jill. We’ve been friends since we went to summer camp together when I was 14. She’s pretty cool, I guess. So, stay tuned for some of those stories. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with a cute little cartoon that I found on the Poets United blog.

So I was on my way to the Optical Heritage Museum in Southbridge, MA — tra la la — to get a shot of the giant pair of glasses on the front lawn. Exciting stuff as this would be a category standing on its own. Imagine my surprise when I found that, not only did the museum cease to exist — at least, not at 12 Crane St. — but there was now a boring tavern in its place. A surly-looking gentleman was standing on the stoop, giving me the stink-eye. (((sigh)))

Fortunately, I had just passed the Registry of Motor Vehicles nearby. Fortunately? Yes, fortunately. You see, this wasn’t just any RMV — or DMV, to you folks in New York state. This was a…wait for it…converted depot! Dun dun DUN.

Registry of Motor Vehicles (Converted Depot) • Southbridge, MA

If I lived in Southbridge, I’m not sure this would make the RMV much more fun, but it sure was interesting to look at. I looped around the back of the building and discovered a train car. I wonder whether it’s been converted to some other use, or if it just sits there looking pretty all day?

Registry of Motor Vehicles (Converted Depot) • Southbridge, MA

Good grief, Charlie Brown — it feels like I haven’t written since “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” first aired. Which doesn’t entirely make sense given that I wasn’t born yet. That would mean that I’ve been writing since my mom was six years old. There’s a lot going on in life right now. When that happens, I get writer’s block and can barely string together a sentence. Work emails don’t count. I’m trying, but some weeks I’m really pushing it. I’ll keep trying.

A few weeks ago, I was driving through West Stockbridge, MA en route to a…vanilla extract shop? …cider vinegar store? I forget. Spotting a cemetery on the side of the road, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a few photos of this graveyard against the stormy-looking sky. In my research, I’ve seen it called Village Catholic Cemetery, Village Catholic Cemetery Richmond Street, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.

Village Catholic Cemetery • West Stockbridge, MA

A lone structure stood against the wind across the street.

Shed Across from Village Catholic Cemetery • West Stockbridge, MA

Aside from the wind, it was pretty quiet; few cars sped by as I snapped away. I don’t know what it is about cemeteries that compels me to take a closer look. Before starting this blog, I never paid much attention to them. But each one is unique and beautiful in its own way. Just like a snowflake. Some of them are massive with ponds and hills everywhere; others are simple church cemeteries. Some of them have fancy, sturdy stone-lined tombs; others have thin, crumbling tombstones.

More recently, I stopped at the Bay Path Cemetery in Charlton, MA. Perhaps, like me, you have distant childhood memories about the stories of Grizzly Adams. James “Grizzly” Adams was born and raised in Medway, MA but went off to California where he trained grizzly bears that he captured for the circus. That’s an extremely abridged version about this guy, but the point is that his grave resides in the Bay Path Cemetery.

Grizzly Adams' Grave Marker • Bay Path Cemetery • Charton, MA

What you see here is the stone marker that the Charlton Historical Society put up. I believe that the real grave sits behind this marker, which I didn’t realize while I was there. You can see the real gravestone here.

Whenever I see very small headstones, I have to wonder what the story is. This one is brought to you by the letter A:

For my Brookfield, MA entry, I decided to take a look at the General Henry Knox trail marker. But when I arrived at the coordinates, I couldn’t find it. Admittedly, I didn’t look too hard, especially after I stumbled upon a peace pole.

Peace Pole at Memorial Square • English, Spanish and...Russian? • Brookfield, MA

I’ll post some easy-to-digest history every now and then, but it isn’t my favorite topic. It’s just hard to stay away sometimes for this girl from Mass. The message on the peace pole, “May peace prevail on Earth,” is a timeless one spanning the world. ‘Twas a phallic entity, but it would do. The best part was that each of the six sides was written in a different language.

Peace Pole at Memorial Square • American Sign Language and French • Brookfield, MA

Have you ever heard of The Peace Pole Project? Masahisa Goi started it in 1955 in Japan, believing that global peace starts with the individual. Now there are peace poles all over the world — schools, town squares, parks, pyramids, the Magnetic North Pole in Canada…

Peace Pole at Memorial Square • French and...Slovenian? Finnish? • Brookfield, MA

Further research tells me that there’s a school called Peace College in Raleigh, NC, which I never even knew existed. That’s pretty awesome — go Pacers.

Church at Memorial Square • Brookfield, MA

In conclusion, I’ll leave you with 10 facts about peace:

The United States Institute of Peace is dedicated to resolving international conflict in a nonviolent manner.

Adolf Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939.

Every two years, a student or student organization in Norway wins the Student Peace Prize for advocating human rights and creating peace.

The Peace Corps has had over 200,000 volunteers to date.

September 21st marks the United Nations’ annual International Day of Peace, when there’s a cease-fire and various celebrations throughout the globe.

“Imagine people living life in peace”: There’s a Web site called imaginepeace.com, which appears to be a hub for Yoko Ono’s peace-related work. The Imagine Peace Tower, a memorial to John Lennon with the phrase “Imagine peace” in 24 languages, stands on an island of Iceland.

Another Peace Tower that has nothing to do with The Beatles sits with the Canadian Parliament buildings in Ottawa.

Pigs Peace Sanctuary. Enough said.

The Peace Abbey, which I mentioned in a previous post, currently shows up #1 in a Google search for the word “peace.”

This post is 414 words. The word “peace” appears 27 times. 28.
